Xavier Obernesser is a junior who defends the net on the ice as one of the New Hartford Spartans Hockey team’s goaltenders.
Xavier has had a love for hockey since he was very young.
“I took interest in hockey watching the Utica Comets, but more specifically the owner of the Utica Comets,” Xavier said. “Robert Esche made me fall in love with playing goalie.”
Xavier’s love for hockey, has contributed to the success of our New Hartford Varsity hockey team.
“Xavier has been playing with me for three years,” states head coach Justin Schachtler. “He is a tremendous goalie who is going to help us in a big way this year. He competes hard every day and is an outstanding teammate.”
Xavier has had many proud moments on the ice; however, he says his proudest moment on the ice came on December 6, 2025.
“We got a much needed win this day,” Xavier said. “We played against Mohawk Valley– after last year’s record we really needed a jumpstart to get going this year.”
Being a goalie isn’t an easy job; not everyone is cut out to do it. Even though Xavier loves the position he plays, he says there were moments where he was nervous.
“I feel playing my first ever game or two I was definitely nervous, especially my first game where I got put in halfway through, there are still some nerves today but not like there was at first,” Xavier said.
Not only is Xavier a great hockey player– he’s just as great off the ice as he is on the ice. Xavier’s English teacher, Mr. Ryan, shared great praise for him.
“He is very lively, funny, he participates in class, he plays jokes on me, he is a great kid and I really enjoy having him,” Mr. Ryan said.
Mr. Ryan isn’t the only one who can speak to Xavier’s character.
“Xavier’s character both on and off the ice is top notch,” stated Coach Schachtler. “He is the kind of player who will do anything for his teammates or coaches. He is a quiet leader in every sense; competitive, engaged, and always giving his best effort.”
Xavier not only plays hockey for New Hartford, he also plays for Oneida County Hockey Club for their 18U Wraparound team. His commitment to the sport is undeniable. Xavier is very proud to be a part of his teams. “He is always wearing some sort of Spartan gear,” Mr. Ryan said. “He talks about hockey often and he writes about it as well.”
According to Coach Schachtler, Xavier still has a bright future ahead of him.
“He continues to grow each year he’s been a part of our team,” Coach Schachtler said. “With this being his breakout year, I truly believe that his greatest accomplishment in high school hockey is still ahead of him.”
