Spartan Success

This winter, Spartan athletes excelled in their sports. Sitting down with the coaches and players, they give a glimpse into their season so far; such as their goals, favorite memories and what they hope for for next season.

Spartan Hockey

The Spartans, currently at a 16-1-1 season, have met their goals for this season. Their main goal was to be competitive and put their best foot forward. The team hopes to make a big run in the playoffs. With 10 seniors, there is great leadership on the team. Coach Schachtler hopes his favorite memory with the boys will be winning sectionals and then going on to win states. He also hopes to bring the success they saw this season back next season, along with bringing the younger guys back for next year.

The undefeated boys swim team has met all of their goals this season. Coach McFarland wanted as many members to qualify for sectionals as possible- and 22 out of 23 qualified, 5 of them qualifying for states, too. Even though they are losing two seniors, McFarland feels that he can build off this success next season. His favorite memory is when the medley relay broke the pool record from 1993, an d also when a member of the team broke the pool record from 1999. Eamon Scott placed second and Finn McNair placed 5 at diving sectionals.

Girls Volleyball

The volleyball team, which went 19-1 for the season were TVL champions, which was their main goal. They not only achieved their goal but went above and beyond and won sectionals. They hope to win again next season, and be just as successful. With many talented young players, the success of the team is likely to continue for a long time. The team’s favorite memory is working hard to achieve to become a better program an and off the court.

Boys Basketball

The boys team this year went 9-12. They accomplished a four game win streak, which allowed them a home game for sectionals. With many returning players, their goal is to improve and make it to the sectional finals next year.

Girls Basketball

The girls basketball team had many goals this season, but they mainly focused on growing their understanding of basketball. Coach Richards says that they exceed his expectations. With an 11-9 record He hopes to continue the program’s success. The team is most proud of their Teacher Appreciation Night “which was a great experience to see all the teachers that have a special place in my players’ hearts” says Coach Richards.

The track team had an amazing season! The team set out to form a strong bond between the members, and they more than achieved that. According to Coach Anderson, many indestructible bonds have been formed.  Coach Anderson’s favorite memory of the season was when a team member achieved a goal, whether it be qualifying for sectionals or states or “simply setting a new personal record,” said Anderson. There is no Win-Loss record for indoor track, but overall they had an extremely successful season.

Snowboarding

The Rail Jam was held at Woods Valley on March 3 (rescheduled from March 2 due to rain).  In a Rail Jam, skiers and snowboarders compete in an event that is like the Slopestyle Competition in the Olympics, but with more open format.  They mainly do tricks on rails, so this is called “jibbing.”  In a deep field, Max Arevalo took fourth place.  and  Landon Gentile placed 6th.

The team this year keep both their Section 3 Class A win and TVL tournament win, and led the TVL with a 14-1 record. Ray Cyr will be representing New Hartford at states this year, for the Section 3 composite team. They hope to carry over their their wins and success from this year on to next season.

Wrestling

Patrick Barres, senior and Chris Belmonte, sophomore, both brought home a sectional title for their weight classes.
