Ecology club isn’t just for science lovers, it’s for nature enthusiasts and anyone who wants to appreciate the great outdoors. The club has been a staple for appreciating our natural world for decades at New Hartford.
Mr. McNair, the club’s adviser at New Hartford, listed some of the activities the club has sponsored throughout its course.
“The club has a long tradition of getting kids involved in outdoor activities, like hiking, white water rafting, kayaking and nature study and has also taken on many school wide initiatives to strengthen their connection to the natural world,” Mr. McNair said.
The club is planning on doing its annual white water rafting trip in the spring, and is currently in the process of planning a snow-shoe hike. Fundraising to lower the cost of the white water rafting trip is their main concern as of late, with a bake sale they hope to have in early December.
Maddie Drake, the club’s president and a senior at New Hartford, has been a part of the ecology club for three years.
Her wish for the club this year is to “expand our club and do more as a team,” said Maddie.
Club meetings are held every Monday at 10:50 a.m. in Mr. McNair’s room, 188. Ideas for future activities and projects are always welcome with those who are interested being encouraged to join.
“It’s fun and close knit,” Maddie said.
Nova O’Donnell, a sophomore at New Hartford, joined the club this year.
“I decided to join after seeing my friends who were in it last year enjoy it so much,” said Nova.
The club thrives on input and every idea is appreciated. There is so much of the world to see and the ecology club hopes to see it all.
“The only limit to what we take on is the imagination of the members,” Mr. McNair said.
