One of the staples of our English department, Mrs. Clive, has been teaching at New Hartford High School for 27 years, teaching three different classes. She is a familiar face in our hallways, but how much do you actually know about Mrs Clive?

Mrs. Clive started her teaching career in 1995 at Adirondack High School, where she taught for one year before coming to New Hartford where she has been ever since. She teaches English 11, English 12, and Journalism, as well as advising the New Hartford High School student newspaper. She is a local to our area having attended Sauquoit High School, then not straying too far as she moved on to get her undergraduate degree at Colgate University and her masters at SUNY Cortland.

When asked about her favorite activities outside of school, Mrs. Clive made it clear that nothing is more important than her family and spending time with them. Mrs. Clive is a mother to six kids, three of whom are still in the New Hartford school district. She shared about her  three daughters and three sons: Emma is married and a teacher at CNS, Maggie is a pediatric nurse at Slocum, Biddie is a freshman at Colgate University, Seamus is a senior here at New Hartford, Eoin is a sophomore and JoJo is in seventh grade at Perry. Mrs. Clive and her husband actually went to their high school prom together, and both attended Colgate University. Mrs. Clive loves to cook and she and her husband go on walks together almost every day!

When asked about her teaching career, Mrs. Clive exclaimed that she loves being a teacher!

“My favorite thing is working with teenagers.  I am a people person and love having conversations with my students. I like to see them grow.” She went on to say that, “If every year my students have become more confident in their skills, I did my job. It is also fun that every day and every class are different– I don’t get bored.”

Ms. Cissi, an AP English Language teacher who has taught with her for 25 years, says, “I have been with Mrs. Clive for all 25 years. When we started AP language, we taught the first 10 years together and formed the course together. She’s my buddy and my support. Our goal in teaching is very much the same, very student-oriented. If there is anyone in need, she is there. She does not expect a thank you and is very steady. She takes care of people and is selfless. She is the person I would call in the middle of the night if I had an emergency; she is very dependable.”
