At first I thought taking an English elective would be boring, exhausting and –unless you have a penchant for writing and the love for the language– a pillow and an alarm would be in order for enduring this block in my schedule.
However, Journalism really opened my eyes to view English in a new and interesting light. It was fun, easy-going and so much to learn that I will genuinely recommend this class for anyone to take.
The Spartan Express started around 1996 using floppy disks and requiring editors to design the layout of the paper which involved long arduous hours– which I can imagine must not have been fun at all.
It later included creative writing and the name changed to Spartan Expressions in 2013 and was distributed as a newspaper sold during lunch for a quarter. During Covid everything was put on a website and subsequently, for the last year, we have our nice SNO website which makes everything simple and easy.

It comes with the benefit for being able to access every single article written by past journalists to which at least one would appeal to any visitor. I personally have found many of them to be of great interest.
The main struggles of this course has to be the interviews. Pinning people down, getting relevant information is difficult and, if you have an esoteric topic, your pool of individuals to choose from is really limited, but once you have the information, it’s a breeze to write.
Other than that, there are marvelous upsides, especially being able to choose any topic you want, from modern history to your favorite baking recipe. It’s also easyto use pictures in your work.
You also gain so much new knowledge by writing articles, even if you thought you knew so much about it. The people you interview, the research that is done will bring differing perspectives and ideas that will broaden your horizons.
All in all this is a class that I know anyone who takes it will love. Mrs. Clive is an amazing teacher and it was a huge pleasure to be in her class.
