New Hartford Community replies on how they like to read.
Are you the type of person who has a preference when it comes to reading? Many people prefer paperback books, while others like reading on their phone, kindles, nooks, or audio books.
“I like to read on my phone and on my Kindle White Page because the screen lights up which makes it easy to see if it’s dark and even during the day,” Patricia Badgley, mother of New Hartford students, said. “It is also nice because I can have multiple books on one platform when traveling. I also like that you can make the words bigger or smaller if you need to. It is also nice because on the Kindle White Page I can read it in the sun at the beach and be able to see it.”
If you are new to reading on your phone you can download some of these apps for free books such as Libby or Sora which you will have to sign up for. Both apps are from the library, so you will be renting out the book that you choose. Sometimes you will have to wait for another person to be done reading it; other times you will be able to get it straight away. You have a certain amount of time that you will be able to hold it for. If you are a fast reader, it is your way to go. You can also check out books at your local library or go to our school’s library and check some out.
If you are a slower reader, I would recommend getting the Kindle or Nook app on your device and buying the e books. With using the Kindle app you can sign up for Kindle Unlimited which is $11.99 a month. You will have access to many books by subscribing to it and save a lot of money. If you have a kindle to read on you can transfer your books over to that and be able to read what’s in your library. Many e books are cheaper than their paperback books; most book prices range from 1.99 to 5.99.
“I grew up reading paper books so that probably influences my preference,” said Mrs Clive, a high School English and Journalism teacher. “ I don’t mind reading non-fiction on a screen because I often skim, but I like feeling immersed in a fictional story and I concentrate better on a paper text. I also like to underline and write in the margins.”
Many people prefer to have paperback books so that they can tab and mark up their books when something exciting, shocking, etc happens in the book. It is very popular to tab and leave notes in the margins in response to memorable words in the text..
There are many different places that people like to read, some like to read at the beach, in a quiet place, on long car rides, at night, at their camp, or during a sunny day outside. You can also have your own preference where you might like to read.
“In the summer I like to read outside in the sun,” said New Hartford Senior student Maya Padmanabhan.
Another option some readers enjoy is listening to books in addition to or in place of reading the words on the page.
“I do like audiobooks,” said Mrs. Clive. “I like hearing correct pronunciation of names and places I’m not familiar with. I also like it when the authors read because it’s interesting to hear their voices. I like listening to audiobooks on car trips too.”
“Sometimes when I’m reading a more difficult book, it helps to listen to the audio while also reading the physical book,” said Mrs. Clive. “Using two senses helps me understand the book more easily.”
To get access to Audio books you can subscribe to Audible with a monthly fee of $14.95 a month or start the free trial. You can also find free audio books on Sora and Libby using your Library card. If you don’t have a library card you can sign up here or at your local Library. You can also go check with Ms. Storm in our school library if you need some help signing up.
Regardless of their preferences, people who enjoy reading usually have a favorite title, author or genre to recommend.
“My most favorite book and series that I have read is Virgin River by Robyn Carr,” said Patricia Badgley. “Another series that I also loved reading was A Chesapeake Shores Novels by Sherryl Woods. I love the stories of both series that I couldn’t stop reading. I enjoyed that there were multiple books in each series.”
Many people have a favorite book or books that they have read in school or in their free time. Everyone has a type or types of books that they like to read. It could be Fantasy, Romance, Drama, History, or so many more different types to choose from.
“I don’t really have a fav book, but I liked The Kite Runner in English class,” said Maya Padmanabhan.
In my own opinion, I prefer to read both paperback and read on my phone or Kindle White Page. I like the feel of reading paperback books and buying the pretty special edition covers. Many authors do a special addition which has extra chapters or sprayed edges which I like. I also like the ease of just picking up my phone and being able to go on the Kindle app to read anywhere. I also like that I can take my kindle white page with me anywhere and have access to all of my books.
