Throughout the year, many emerging artists have produced breakthrough albums, and have risen in popularity. One of these artists is Gracie Abrams, with her sophomore album released over the summer of this year. In contrast to her previous album and extended plays, Abrams quickly accumulated a large fanbase, with many of her songs peaking in the Top 50 Charts almost overnight.
Despite top hits such as “Risk,” “Close to You,” and even songs from her recently released deluxe version, such as “That’s So True,” many fans find the change in pace and emotion unfamiliar, preferring earlier songs instead.
Jasper Kyle, a new fan, states that his favorite work from her is “minor,” her first released extended play. “I feel like her newest album is repetitive and drags on,” he states.
Many fans prefer the softer, slower pace of her previous songs, in contrast to the eye catching, pop-centric beat of her new ones. However, even her older songs such as “Wishful Thinking” and “Feels Like” still carry the same energy, making it not as sharp a contrast as anticipated. Most of the songs on her new album also have been unreleased
“I really like the production of the album, her work is always cohesive and consistent,’’ says Lynn Mizgala. However, she agrees that it is not her favorite album from Gracie Abrams, preferring her freshman album.
Despite the criticisms, her new enthusiastic take on creating music shows emotional and maturity growth that comes with age. In an interview with Vogue, Gracie Abrams states “All of my songs were very whispery, which is how I grew up singing because it wasn’t for anyone else to hear.”
Although her change in music may be unfamiliar to old fans, it ultimately shows her improvement and increased happiness as she grows through her career.
