2024 Favorites According to Spotify Wrapped
Every year in early December, people log onto their Spotify Accounts and look to see their Favorite Artist and Songs of the Year according to Spotify Wrapped. The compilation that the app, for marketing purposes, created consisted of users most listened to artists, songs, and listening activity over the previous year. From our very own New Hartford Senior High School, here are students’ results.
The Top Artists Genre was Pop and the popular artists in this genre were Artists like Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, and New Jeans. However, Alternative Artists were popular as well, including Lana Del Ray, Olivia Rodrigo, The Weekend, and Alternative Hip Hop artist Tyler The Creator.
Senior at New Hartford High School, Isabella Silva, says her Top Artists were Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo and she loves “Champagne Problems” by Taylor Swift and “Lacy” by Olivia Rodrigo “both songs made my top 5 as well,” says Silva.
To get a deeper understanding of why their favorite artists were who they were, I asked everyone why they love those artists.
“Well my mom loves Taylor Swift so listening to her with my mom is super fun! She introduced me to her at first and all of her favorite songs by her so I got to learn from her. I love Olivia because she generally speaks from the heart and yes her songs are sometimes upbeat but they all have a special meaning. Both artists really tell stories in their songs and as you listen you can catch the deeper meanings overtime!” says Isabella Silva about why she loves Taylor and Olivia.
While Isabella talks about the lyrics of her Top Artists’ Songs, Aisha Mawier, fellow senior, says she loves “the unique sound they all make” and focuses more on the music of the songs, when asked why her Top artists are Lana Del Ray, Tyler The Creator, and The Weekend. Her favorite songs of theirs include: “White Mustang” by Lana Del Ray, “Nightmare” by Tyler The Creator, and “House of Balloons” by The Weekend.
Another senior Sarah Win shared her Top Artists who ended up being Ariana Grande and New Jeans. Sarah says, “ I really like their music and how they explore different music types and I also like their music videos because they are very creative in what they do. I also really loved Ariana Grande’s because I really like her album Eternal Sunshine because it is a really personal one and love how it has different elements to it like ‘Bye’ is more upbeat while ‘We cant be friends’ is more sad.”
“My top 2 songs of Arianas are “God is a Woman” and from Eternal Sunshine would have to be “Supernatural” because of their vibes. I like Supernatural because it makes you free while ‘God is a woman’ is empowering. My favorites of New Jeans are “Supernatural” and “Hype Boy” because they take me back to the 2000s Y2k pop era” says Sarah Win.
Some cool features about Spotify Wrapped is it also tells you what percentile you rank among listeners of your Favorite Artists. In 2024 Spotify added new results of different things that listeners can see to make the experience more interesting.
The general consensus was that people were not surprised by their results which supported the app’s accuracy in formulating these collections and no one had the same exact conclusions which ensures the variety in people’s taste and choices on the app. Overall, people seem to get excited each year to check their results!
