Thanksgiving is a Traditional American holiday that is celebrated among many families throughout the country and even though it is a widespread celebration, it is celebrated in many different ways with different people for everyone.
The holiday celebrated is a great time for people to be grateful for what they have everyday that we take for granted often.
“I believe that everyone should be grateful everyday for the little things in life like getting to go to school, having family and friends, a house, and thanksgiving is one day to be grateful,” social worker at New Hartford Senior High School Mrs. Hoyer said .
Therefore, I asked people what they are thankful for in their own lives including Mrs. Hoyer.
“ I am thankful for my family and my critters(pets) and that they are in good health and I am grateful that I get to come to work every day and for my kiddos there, so yeah, I am also thankful for my job,” Mrs. Hoyer said.
“ I am thankful for the health of my whole family, for my children, including my wife, and my whole family. Health is the most important,” owner of the local restaurant Cafe Canole, Mr. Jason Nole said.
“I am thankful for my friends and family mostly and I just feel as though they are there for me and have been with me my whole life,” Sarah Win, a senior at New Hartford, said.
What seems to be an ongoing theme is that people are grateful for their family. Although, as Sarah Win points out, friends are important as well. to have and be grateful for and there are people who have friendsgivings too and celebrate and be grateful with them for this holiday.
“ We have a friends giving in Florida with friends and have dinner at our house down there and during the day we go to the beach then come back to the house and have dinner later,” Mrs. Hoyer said.
Another thing to be thankful for is food and this holiday especially showcases that: people have this big Thanksgiving dinner with traditional foods while also serving their own recipes and foods in their own dinners.
“Our stuffing has Italian sausage– which is different– celery, onion, lots of butter, chicken stock, and stale bread we toast and then we moisten everything with eggs and the chicken stock, salt and pepper of course. We use all natural ingredients and I brine the turkey which means it soaks in a salted water bath for 6 hours and makes the turkey more moist when you cook it,” Chef Jason Nole says about how he makes his Thanksgiving dinner.
“The hardest thing to make on thanksgiving: I think nothing is hard but everything takes time like sweet potatoes… everything is time consuming” -Jason Nole
“My favorites are the turkey and stuffing but I really like the mashed potatoes I have that have heavy butter, sour cream cheese and heavy cream. And everything gets salt and butter.”
“My favorites I love are mashed sweet potatoes and stuffing and green bean casserole. I am a vegetarian so I don’t do turkey so that is my whole meal” says Mrs. Hoyer.
“ I really like turkey and that is probably my favorite Thanksgiving meal with gravy,” said Sarah Win.
Talking about how she spends the holiday Sarah said “We have the dinner at my house because a lot of my family lives far away so we just have everyone over at my house.”
When asked about how he got into cooking, Chef Jason Nole said, “Growing up I always had a part in cooking. If my mom was making pasta we would help her turn the pasta machine, and the sauce, and roll meatballs and I actually enjoyed helping out doing that stuff while other kids did not. But I think it was also growing up ,you know, in an Italian household.”
