Imagine senior year you have a season ending injury and can’t play your last year of sports in high school. This has happened to many people including me. Unfortunately, injuries can happen at any time and people can’t control them.
There are all different types of injuries. These injuries can range from a sprained ankle to torn ACL. Some people can have a season-ending injury that requires surgery, but then there are others who just have a minor injury and get back to playing sports in a couple of weeks.
Former starting linebacker on the Varsity football team, Jermaine Burton, had a lot to say about his season ending injury.
“It’s crazy how injuries just happen out of nowhere,” Jermaine said. “During the Syracuse ITC game I was going to tackle a person and when I got up my shoulder was out of place. It wasn’t the first time this had happened. It felt very weird and I knew it was gonna be bad. I had to get an MRI and when the results came back they said I was out for the season. Now I am debating on getting surgery. It definitely sucks because I can’t play football my senior year.”
Senior Jake Rockford also shared about his ACL injury when he was in 7th grade playing modified football.
“ I was kicking the ball and hyperextended my leg. I went to get an MRI and found out it was my AC. After the game my leg was like a soft ball and couldn’t really bend it at all. I thought it was not my acl because after a few days I could walk on it but it was. I ended up tearing my ACL meniscus and MCL, the doctor said it would take 6 months to recover. I went to a lot of pt. I was very depressed because I couldn’t play any sports. Mentally I was fine, but Physically I lost a lot of muscle.”
Another Senior Caroline Sekula had a similar injury to Jake, tearing both her ACLs.
“I tore both my ACL sophomore and junior year during a soccer game. I felt good mentally but I had to work a lot to get back to my normal physical state. I went to PT a lot and stuck to my program. PT was good. I went out to Syracuse for PT consistently for 6 months. It went but well you have to really work though to regain your muscle lost in your leg. ”
As many people go through injuries there is also a chance for recovery. There are many ways people can do this. One very important way is Physical Therapy also known as PT. PT is recommended to most injuries. People attend this to try to regain muscles that they have lost and to try to get back to 100%. Most people attend PT 2 to 3 times a week. With my ACl injury I have attended PT and my leg feels so much stronger than it did when I got hurt.
There is also a downside to injuries. An article published by Boston Children’s Hospital a Surgeon says, “Rest is integral to physical healing. However, for some athletes, being injured and getting taken out of their sport can trigger significant mental health issues — anxiety, depression, and eating disorders to name a few.’’ As many people experience depression there are ways to overcome this. A great way is to get a therapist.
Many athletes play sports to have fun, but sometimes playing a sport isn’t fun when you’re injured.
