On June 12, 2024, the nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, announced the National Medal recipients of the 2024 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in grades 7–12. Senior High Art student Claire Mitchell, was selected to receive a Gold Medal Award for her photograph UCONN Cow.
Each year, the Alliance partners with visual arts and literary arts organizations across the country to bring the Scholastic Awards to local communities. Teens in grades 7–12 (ages 13 and up) apply in 28 categories of art and writing. In 2024, students submitted nearly 340,000 works of art and writing to the Scholastic Awards. Fewer than 2,500 works received a National Medal which places Clarie within the top 8% of all submissions! Since 1923, the Awards have celebrated teen artists and writers from across the country. Award winning students are now part of that legacy, joining the ranks of notable alumni, including Andy Warhol, Zac Posen, Kay WalkingStick, Richard Avedon, and Lena Dunham—all of whom won Scholastic Awards when they were teens. This honor opens doors for students by providing access to scholarship programs and workshops. It also provides the ability to have work published and displayed in regional and National Exhibitions.
